Last night a group of DCL folks met up at a co-worker’s house for tacos and talk about the Nooks. We were all to read the book Brooklyn by Colm Toibin. We did talk about the book a little, we talked about the Nooks and eBooks a lot.
Many of us, myself included, did not want to turn the Nooks back in, we loved them and enjoyed reading on them. Some were not so taken with them.
I believe we all found the navigation on the Nook to be difficult. There is a measurable delay when you press your finger on the touchpad before anything happens, and this takes some getting used to. Finding what you are looking for is not always easy even with some directions that are included with each Nook. Can the Nook be improved on – absolutely! However, just getting the experience of reading an eBook on a device was what I really was interested in and I think our overall consensus was that we liked it.
There was a lot of discussion about how we can incorporate eBooks into our collection in the future. Budget times are bad right now and we know that adding a new format will take away from our already limited collection budget. We all agree, however, that we need to move forward with adding eBooks. We will be putting up a survey on our website next month asking for your input so we can make some key decisions about what to buy and how much to buy.
eBooks are in our future and when we start purchasing them they will be in the ePub format that will work on all devices EXCEPT THE KINDLE.So watch for our survey and give us your feedback. — Jill
